Zoeller 3/4 HP Sump Pump Comparisons: Price vs Reliability

This article is about two nearly identical Zoeller brand sump pumps made by the same company but under different brand names. The Zoeller company owns the Flint & Walling Mfg. Company Inc. in Kendallville, Indiana USA which sells the ‎Star Water Systems brand.

Which Zoeller 3/4 HP sump pump you buy will probably depend upon how much you want to spend. I prefer to spend more and get a longer warranty.

A warranty is an indicator of pump quality which translates into how long the manufacturer thinks the pump will last.

I don’t like fixing or replacing any sump pump. So, I would buy the Zoeller ¾ HP sump pump 1099-0001  with the 3-year warranty vs the 2-year warranty for the Zoeller 3/4 HP sump pump 024490

However, the 3-year warranty is from the date of manufacture. So, if the pump sat in the warehouse for a year that would equal a 2-year warranty.

Take note that the 2-year warranty is from the date of purchase, not the date of manufacture. So, that is a plus.

Currently, the price difference is double for the 3-year warranty Zoeller model 1099-0001 vs the 024490 model. However, the price difference is not just in the warranty. So, lets take a closer look.

The More Reliable Zoeller 3/4 HP Sump Pump 1099-0001

What makes it more reliable is the dual (double) floats that operate the on/off switch. This is the real reason I would buy the more expensive ¾ HP sump pump.

The second float switch only operates if the primary float ball doesn’t turn the sump pump on. So, the chances of it wearing out is nearly zero.

On the other hand, the primary float switch is likely the first thing to fail on any sump pump.

Since the Zoeller sump pump model 024490 only has a primary float switch, if it fails you are in trouble. Which is why many homes have a battery backup sump pump.

At least the Zoeller model 1099-0001 with the second float switch will give you time to get the primary float ball switch problem fixed. That is worth a lot of money to me. Just imagine the cost of having to gut the basement after a flood to understand why I am willing to spend an extra $150.

The Less Expensive Zoeller 3/4 HP Sump Pump 024490

At half the price, this sump pump could be an easy choice for a homeowner on a tight budget.

Most homes need to pump water out of the basement which requires pumping water 10 feet upwards. That is known as a lift height or head height.

At a 10-foot lift height, this sump pump will provide 540 gallons per hour less than the more expensive sump pump. So, if that 540 gallons is important to you consider buying the Zoeller model 1099-0001 instead of this one.

However, at a 20-foot lift height this pump provides an additional 60 gallons per hour.

Both sump pumps have the same pumping capacity at all other lift heights.

Overall, both sump pumps have practically the same pumping capacity.

The Zoeller model 024490 has an 8-foot power cord vs 9 foot for the other pump. That isn’t much of a difference unless you need that extra foot to reach an electrical outlet.

As mentioned before, the Zoeller 3/4 HP Sump Pump 024490 has a two-year warranty that starts at the time of purchase. Whereas the other pump has a warranty that starts from the date of manufacture.

The first time I helped to install a drain tile and basement sump pump system was 1978.

Since then I have worked for a city water utility where I worked with and maintained pumps.

My rental properties and personal homes all needed sump pumps.

As a modular home dealer/builder, those new homes needed sump pumps.

I put that experience to good use by providing reliable, useful, and practical advice on buying, using, and maintaining sump pumps.
